Description
The Victorian Era saw the beginning of mass production, marketing and advertising of goods for the masses. This genuine antique is an affordable, tangible link to these times. Produced by the Macniven and Cameron Company this packaging was for selling nibs designed for a Waverley fountain pen. Probably dating from the 1890's or there abouts, this item is in excellent condition. The burgundy coloured box is made of sturdy cardboard which is still intact. On the front, a pasted paper label with red printed text, also doubles as an advertisement. Considering the size of the label great effort has been made to include all the advertising points for the product and company. The company's advertising slogan "They come as a boon & a blessing to men. The Pickwick, the Owl & the Waverley Pen" is seen along with the royal warrant of Queen Victoria and proudly displayed "Pen makers to Her Majesty's Government Offices." In each corner are the names of pens the company make: Waverley, Pickwick, Owl and Hindoo. Along each side is a short quote from various newspapers, in the centre the statistic that 3007 newspapers recommend them and finally the price sixpence for a box. There are 15 metal nibs inside that look as though they were made yesterday. Also included is a trade card from the Waverley Autograph Traveller Series depicting the autograph of the explorer David Livingstone (card no.1). A great item for a collector of vintage fountain pens and stationary, for someone interested in vintage packaging or advertising, or as a piece in a museum or Victorian themed display.
