First produced in 1948, Scrabble has gone on to become the most famous and best loved word game in the world. It first appeared in the UK in 1953 using wooden letter tiles and it wasn't until the late 1950's that plastic letter tiles were introduced. This item is over 60 years old and is in good condition considering the decades of use this would have had. The box remains strong and intact although two corners and one side have split, there is rubbing along the edges and at the corners, some surface damage and remnants of adhesive tape but this all goes to authenticate it's age. The lid has a very simple burgundy leatherette looking covering with a yellow and green circular sticker giving the title, manufacturer and stating this is the first edition with plastic tiles. On the reverse of the lid are printed the instructions. On the inside the cardboard storage tray is in very good condition. All 100 thin, ivory coloured, lightweight plastic letter tiles are present as are the four wooden letter racks. The game board is in an excellent clean condition. A great item for a collector of vintage games or Scrabble sets, as a prop in a production or 1950's themed room or as a fun way for the family to improve spelling and word power.
