Titled "Pleasure Days", this absolutely huge jigsaw puzzle shows an idylic vision of halcyon days, depicting a stone built bridge spanning a river with an ye olde English village in the background. Made by Philmar, a company established by Philip Marx around 1937, the business became a significant British manufacturer of cardboard jigsaws in the post WW2 period. Producing various ranges, this being the Exclusive series, the company specialized in famous buildings and rual scenes incorporating 1950's life. An example of this very jigsaw is in the Julie Peverett Collection at the Museum of English Rural Life and Special Collections Service in the Universityof Reading. Dating from the late 1950's this jigsaw itself is in extremely good condition. The 1200 fully interlocking, thin cardboard pieces are present and in good order. The box is showing it's age. There is rubbing along the edges and at the corners, some creasing, some minor surface marks, one corner has split and a couple of side have faded but this all adds to an authentic vintage look. The size of the jigsaw, and the complexity of the picture means this is more for a seasoned jigsaw puzzler. A great item for a collector of vintage jigsaws, for someone with a liking for the 1950's or simply for something to do on the long dark evenings.
