Description
Developed in 1875 by two English brothers in the USA, James and William marketed this sweet, malted milk drink as food for invalides and babies. As popularity grew in this country they created a factory in Slough. Horlicks was extensively used on polar explorations and during WW1. Horlicks became a limited company in 1925. Ever since it has been advertised as a nutritional supplement to be consumed before bed. This empty, rectangular metal tin is in good condition considering it is possibly from the 1950's when 20 tablets cost ninepence. The lid is detachable. It is cream in colour with simple, pale blue text which included the list of ingredients. There is some surface wear including a minor dent, a few small scratches and several rust spots but this doesn't detract from the readability or appearence of the lid. The base has a gun metal look. Internally the tin is highly polished which is now becoming covered with dark blemishes. A great item for a collector of vintage tins, for someone interested in medical/beverage items or as part of a period display.
