Description
This unassuming item is a memento of the nuclear age. Originally costing 6'6, this Ordnance Survey Half-Inch Map of Great Britain - Bristol and Stroud (Sheet 156) cloth map has survived remarkably well for over 60 years. The thin card cover has some creasing, slight tears and rubbing around the edges. On the front there is an ink stamped name "A Houghton Brown" which is either an individual or a company. Intact when fully opened up, there are no holes, tears or discolouration. The colour remains vivid and overall the map is very clean with no added annotations apart from the site of the Berkeley Nuclear Power Station being marked and a hotel being circled. We assume that this map was used by a consultant or contractor who visited the site of the power station and who marked on the hotel that they stayed at while in the area. A great piece for someone who collects vintage maps, for someone connected to or interested in nuclear power stations or for someone looking at how the Bristol & Stroud area has changed over the decades.
