Description
Since it's formation in 1887, the St John's Ambulance Brigade has continued to offer free medical care. Although a wholly voluntary organisation it's uniformed members have given medical assistance in events large and small; and contributed aid in many major conflicts. We believe this item dates from around the turn of the 20th Century when 2000 volunteers were assisting in the Boer War. During WW1 they helped war casualties in many hospitals around England and overseas. This triangular bandage was probably a training aid to be used alongside a booklet as it has numbered illustrations on how to use the bandage for different wounds. The black printed diagrams depict a man dressed in late Victorian/Edwardian clothing so we guess the bandage is of that era. The St John's emblem is printed at the top and at the base are the words "Registered Design 7764". Overall the bandage is in very good condition apart from a few minor stains and a small hole in the emblem. We have resisted the temptation to wash or iron this item fearing it will become damaged. This is a great piece for a collector of vintage medical equipment, for someone with a connection to St John's Ambulance Brigade or for someone interested in possible artefacts of the Boer War/WW1.
