Description
Before the the Sat-Nav there were maps. But using a folded paper map while driving is somewhat cumbersome let along very dangerous. So a clever solution was to divide the map into handy sized cards that could be used safely while travelling along the roads of Britain. Back in 1970, from when this item is dated, Jet petrol stations offered these as a promotional product for motorists. The cards are slightly larger than a standard postcard. The complete compliment of 36 cards are double sided. 34 cards show the whole road network of Great Britain at the time in full colour and two cards show a more detailed view of the centre of London, Birminham and Glasgow. The cards are housed in a yellow, plastic folder, along with a gazetteer booklet, a folded cardboard route planner and a transparent plastic wallet to hold the cards in use. This item is in very good, clean condition. The covers of the yellow folder have some dirty marks on and inside the sleeves holding the items in place have some very small rips due to use. Overall a smart item for a collector of maps, for a collector of petroleum ephemera or for someone interested in how the UK road network has changed in the past five decades.
