Description
Despite one of the wettest summers on record, the Empire Exhibition of 1938, still had 12 million visitors. Held at Bellahouston Park in Glasgow, the visitors purchased all types of memorabilia to mark their trip to one of the largest international events of the day and this item is just one example. Postally unused, this postcard is in excellent condition considering it is 80 years old. On the front is a coloured reproduction of an original water colour by Brian Gerald, it depicts the centrepiece structure, The Tower of Empire or Tait Tower. It was 470 feet (140m) tall and was demolished in July 1939. On the reverse are the manufacturer's details and information about the painting. As for all official pieces of merchandise of the Empire Exhibition Scotland 1938, the Scottish Lion logo is present. A great piece for a collector of vintage postcards, for someone interested in the history of Glasgow or who has connections with Scotland.
